Priorat, Comida & Vino | Tour privado

Priorat, Food & Wine | Private Tour

DOQ Priorat holds a special seat in the pantheon of Spanish wine Denominations of Origin. When 40 years ago a group of bohemian friends settled in one of the areas with poorest soils in the region to try and bring it back to life after the 19th century’s pests, everybody took them for fools. Today, this group of then adventurous hippies compose the elite of winemaking in Spain and what was a poor, economically forgotten rural area has become a dream come true. We are talking about an isolated Mediterranean landscape surrounded of steep hills and forgotten villages and, indeed, some of the poorest and harshest soils around. From there, almost like a miracle, some of the roughest vines grew, old and dry, giving some of the most internationally awarded Catalan and Spanish wines. Leave the city behind to immerse into this rural hills region of highly regarded landscapes that will change the way you understand wine.

Tour description

Get ready for a serious day out of Barcelona! The remoteness of this winemaking region will leave you with the real feeling you made it into the deep countryside. Jump in the private vehicle we will provide with and start asking questions to your English-speaking local guide, who will really enjoy telling you everything about the area you are just about to discover. Priorat has a really fascinating history of how winemaking culture escalated from totally eroded and forgotten to the very top of rankings worldwide. And all by hand of tiny, family owned and low-production focused wineries that grow vines in very particular conditions. Because of all this, Priorat is one of the only two Qualified Denominations of Origin (DOQ) in Spain (along with La Rioja), embracing higher and more severe quality standards than the traditional Spanish Denominations of Origin.

Priorat is filled with beautiful and isolated tiny villages whose economy focuses mostly on wine production nowadays. Little cellars and wineries fill a scenario of vines stacked in very steep terraces due to the hilly landscape of the region. They grow slow and old from a slate soil that happens to be very particular to this region. A harsh and dry soil, rocky and raw, where vines struggle to survive. Out of this struggle, they release a very low production of truly magical grapes that winemakers handle like gold.

Depending on your choice, you are going to visit two or three wineries in this formidable area. An expert guide of each of these cellars will take you through the facilities and, in some of them, you will also be able to visit the vineyards. Needless to say, you are going to taste the most exquisite wines they produce and be able to ask anything you want to know about the whole process and local culture. In your way from one cellar to the next you will also stop in a local restaurant, in one of the villages the hills are sprinkled with. Feast there and make the most out of this experience by enjoying the local Catalan and Spanish gastronomy by hand of a full meal before your next stop!

How to tailor this tour

Two or three wineries? How much can you take? This is a long journey for one day so picking the two wineries option will last around 9.5 hours, while picking three will take you 11 hours.

Do you want to visit Tarragona? If our Penedès & Cava + Sitges or Tarragona Private Tour does not suit you and you want to include Tarragona in your Priorat wine tour, please tell us. This would only be compatible with the two wineries option and would still result in a very long day. Even if we don’t recommend it, we might be able to arrange it!

Do you have a personal approach to this tour? This is your private experience, so it’s all up to you! Do you want to visit any particular place we didn’t include in the description? Share your thoughts with us, and our expert team will work with you to design your perfect experience.
