The silhouette of Montserrat mountain range majestically presides the horizon as you are driven through the countryside surrounding Barcelona. Fields of barley, wheat and vines compose everything you see. The sparkling flavors of the wines you just tasted still dance in your tongue. And the history of the families whose wineries you visited flutters in your mind. Succeeding generations that preserve tradition, the Spanish Civil War, long lasting lineages… You have escaped the fuss of Barcelona, and you are getting to know the authentic culture that conforms this territory. And its people. While sinking into the wine country, you meet face to face with the passion of its protagonists, who have shaped the region and preserved its culture with their hard work. And with their fabulous wines.
Join us on this small-group half day afternoon wine tour that will provide you with an insight of two different wine-making regions in the area surrounding Barcelona. Departing from the very city center, our English-speaking local guide will first take you to the core of cava-making, D.O. Penedès. Beautifully crafted sparkling wines and local food await in Ca n’Estella cava winery to captivate your senses while you learn about the region and the fascinating history of the family who runs the cellar. A beautiful 18th century masia (the traditional Catalan country house) presides the estate of this small winery, where they are indeed proud to be small.
The winery is currently managed by Anna Vidal, the 3rd generation in this winemaker family to own the estate. If she is not abroad promoting her wines, she will be more than glad to welcome you to the property. It will be on the gorgeous veranda of her very own family house that you will be served traditional cuisine in the shape of local hot and cold tapas, paired with their top quality cava.
The winery’s Rabetllat i Vidal cavas and Clot dels Oms wines have been granted more than a hundred awards in very prestigious national and international competitions, including the Best Chardonnay of the World (Chardonnay du Monde) for its 2011 Gran Clot dels Oms Chardonnay.
To continue with our wine tour, we will head north towards another wonderful estate, Oller del Mas, located in a different wine-making region well-known for its red wines: D.O. Pla de Bages. If you thought you had had your share of history, prepare to wander through medieval Catalonia by entering the restored 10th century castle in which this winery is to be found nowadays. Behind its thick walls of stone lives the very strong and pioneer ambition of its owner, Frank, which is targeted at recovering the grape varieties that traditionally belonged to the area but were nearly extinct after the wine cataclysm that phylloxera plague caused in the 19th century.
Visit their vineyards, hear about their history and learn how wines are traditionally crafted in this château estate. Your wine tour will conclude, of course, with more wine! Taste a selection of three exclusive ecological wines, delectably paired with a local cheese platter – the cherry on top of this Wine, Tapas & Cava experience.
Head back to the vibrant Barcelona after an intense afternoon of wine, gastronomy and culture to be dropped off, again, at the very city center. What a fabulous day trip!
