Extended Montserrat, Tapas & Wine

Set out from Barcelona just after 10 am for a day that combines a visit to Montserrat mountain and monastery with a wonderful gastronomical and wine tasting experience.

Taking the cogwheel train up the mountain will ensure you get the best views of the valley while comfortably making your way towards the monastery site. There, your guide will make sure you don’t miss any of the highlights – including a taste of the traditional Montserrat sweet bread accompanied by a sampling of the four locally brewed liquors.

The second leg of the tour begins with a bus ride towards Oller del Mas Cellar, a winery located in a 10th century castle at the feet of Montserrat that is famous for its prize-winning ecological wines. There, you can expect to taste the winery’s most exclusive wines and sample the best Catalan gastronomy in a setting that exudes passion, tradition and history.

This tour is perfect for you if… You are passionate about authenticity – expressed in good wine, tradition, gastronomical culture, nature, and knowledge of the fascinating Catalan culture.

More information

Your tour departs from Plaza Cataluña, the main meeting point of the city, from which we will head for the small town of Monistrol de Montserrat. Our local expert guides will liven up the bus ride with plenty of quality information about the origin and evolution of the history of Barcelona. From Monistrol you will ride the “Cremallera de Montserrat”, a cogwheel train with superb views of the countryside and the mountain.

Once at the Monastery, you will taste some local products as a midday snack: coca de Montserrat, a traditional sweet snack; and a sample of homemade Montserrat liquors. Your guides will then pass on their passion and knowledge of the site to you – history, legends and importance of this location in the cultural development of Catalonia. Some free time will be allowed for taking a stroll through the monastery, walking to a couple of viewpoints, or even tasting some artisanal products from the local food market.

After your visit to Montserrat, it is now time for food and wine! About 30 minutes drive from Montserrat awaits Oller del Mas Cellar, located in a 10th century castle. At this point the group will divide, depending on your food choice: you may opt for eating a three-course meal at a local restaurant, or a tapas brunch during the wine tasting. Both options will enjoy an extended visit throughout the cellar, located inside the castle. The visit will allow you to discover how wine was made 600 years ago, and how tradition is combined with modern technologies nowadays.

Wine tasting will consist of three premium château wines. Our guides will show you the key to identify a good wine through the sight, nose, and palate. If you have chosen the tapas option, you will enjoy your brunch during the wine tasting; for those that have already had a multi-course meal, the tasting will be accompanied by a cheese platter. Just before returning to Barcelona, you be able to take a stroll through the vineyards, enjoying the privileged landscape which surrounds Oller del Mas.
